Not the Hobbit, but it’ll tide you over
No, I’m not talking about “Twilight” either. They’ve posted trailers for the next Pixar movie, “Up,” which will be out May 29, 2009. So, while we eagerly (anxiously for the purists, I suppose) await the release of “The Hobbit” movie in 2011, we can enjoy what should be another excellent Pixar feature.
Bella and why you should see it
Earlier, I had posted about the movie Juno and its life-affirming message. Well, there is another movie, just out on video, that is just out on DVD that I would strongly encourage because of its clear pro-life message.
Bella is the love story of a soccer star and a waitress whose lives become entertwined through her pregnancy. It is a small movie that opened and didn’t get as much notice as Juno probably because its pro-life message is more overt. In fact, among the reviews that I saw, most gave it an unfavorable rating simply for the fact that it was unashamedly pro-life.
But for those who can look past their own biases, there is a beautiful movie here. This review (second down), from Colin Covert of the Minneapolis Star Tribune:
There’s not much more happening here than two people getting to know each other as we come to understand them both, yet that’s a story we never tire of, so long as it’s told well. And here, it is. Writer/director Alejandro Gomez Monteverde’s film is utterly touching and captivating, wisely humanist in refusing to cast even the most unpleasant characters as cardboard villains. A loving testament to the beauty of family, “Bella” won the People’s Choice Award at last year’s Toronto Film Festival. Rarely are crowd-pleasers so effortlessly artful.
Looking forward to ‘The Hobbit’
For the fans of J.R.R. Tolkein’s “The Lord of the Rings,” which I consider myself among, it looks like a director may have been chosen for the film adaption of Tolkein’s “The Hobbit.” From AFP:
LOS ANGELES (AFP) — Mexican director Guillermo Del Toro is in talks to direct two films based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy novel “The Hobbit,” entertainment press reported Monday.
Del Toro, best known for his Oscar-winning 2006 drama “Pan’s Labyrinth,” was on a shortlist of film-makers deemed capable of adapting Tolkien’s story for the big screen, the Hollywood Reporter said without indicating its sources.
The film of “The Hobbit” will be one of the most eagerly anticipated films in years following New Zealand director Peter Jackson’s three phenomenonally successful “Lord of the Rings” movies.
Jackson is to act as executive producer on the two “Hobbit” films, which will be shot back-to-back in 2009 before release in 2010 and 2011, according to studio backers New Line and MGM.
I have not seen any of the movies Del Toro has directed, but I wasn’t familiar with Jackson’s work either before. I am eagerly anticipating what these movies will look like.
